I spent a week in St. Augustine back in June for work.  My coworker, Tony, recommended a few places to check out for burgers.  I had a couple good burgers, but for some reason he didn’t mention what might be the best burger in St. Augustine.  I consider that grounds for termination.  I’ll let you know how my complaint shakes out.

Frozen drinks and all kinds of Rum are served on this boat.  It’s not actually a boat, but a restaurant on St. George Street in historic downtown St. Augustine.  Oysters & Shrimp highlight the menu, but it’s the Double Cheeseburger that will dazzle you.

They keep it old school with an 80/20 ground chuck blend.  The two 3oz. patties from American Butcher Company are balled and smashed on a chrome plated griddle, giving the beef a very hard sear.  The balls are lightly smashed first, then thinly shaved sweet onions are smashed into them further, then they are seasoned nicely with salt & pepper.  They use vidalia onions, and when in season, walla walla onions.

American cheese is the choice and melted nicely.  Sliced pickles line the bottom of the soft, lightly toasted potato bun from Village Bread & Bagel.  This is your classic, onion smashburger.  You are wondering about sauce?  This burger has no sauce and it’s that good that it doesn’t need a sauce.  Would I like some sauce on the burger?  Yes, but you will love it straight up.

There is exciting news from chef and co-owner Rob Crabtree.  After almost 5 years in their current location, they will be moving to a new location a few blocks away and doubling the square footage.  It will have a stage for live music and an outdoor seating area.

If you are searching for the best burger in St. Augustine, this is a must stop on your journey.  It’s a fantastic smashburger!
