My goal has always been to tell you about the best burgers in Florida, but I also try to get you some interesting information about the people that bring us these amazing burgers. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people over the years, with some wonderful stories. These three guys are having a lot of fun rockin’ the Food Truck World wherever they go. I equate this team to a great rock band.
Boy Named Sous – Tampa Bay Area / Super Smashburger
The Frontman is Owner and Co-Chef, Randy. He’s got some charisma. He’s been working in the restaurant industry for over 20 years. He knows what the crowd wants. The lead guitarist is Co-Chef, Kevin. Kevin and Randy met in high school and have been friends ever since. Randy will tell you that Kevin is the best Chef he knows. Kevin’s solo work on the grill is nothing short of melodic. On drums is Chris. He’s the Assistant Manager and they call him the Hype man. Randy has known Chris for over 15 years. He will keep the beat going all night long. These guys are loving what they are doing and working hard to give us a great culinary experience. This is not a Smashburger Food Truck. There’s a great Smashburger on the menu, but you could see anything on the menu at any time. They put a lot of thought and creativity into every menu item from a Chef’s perspective. I’ve stopped by food times and the Super Smashburger has always been fantastic as well as everything else on the menu I’ve tried.
As you can imagine, the Super Smashburger is their best selling item. The two 4oz. patties are an Angus beef 73/27 grind. Randy says the higher fat content adds a really nice crisp and stays super juicy. No argument here. Lawrys is your seasoning. White American is your melted cheese. Onions? Not sautéed or caramelized. They are pickled in a red wine/key lime pickling solution. Randy says it adds a little texture to the meat/cheese/bun. I liked them a lot. There are a few sliced dill pickles on the bottom bun. Sauce? Delicious and plentiful. It’s called Shhh sauce. They will tell you what it is if you tell them a secret about yourself. The bun is fantastic. It’s a soft, buttery sesame seed bun, toasted on the grill with garlic butter. I do need to mention that they melt a slice of cheese on the bottom patty only. If you want a slice on the top patty, just ask. I have not had it as a triple yet. Yet!
This is a burger you should have on your hit list. Boy Named Sous will quickly become one of your favorite stops.
Another menu item I love are “The Balls”. The Balls are a Cuban staple. They are seasoned beef and pork picadillo, inside a mashed potato ball, breaded and deep fried. They get a drizzle of Shhh sauce over them. I’d get an extra side of Shhh sauce, as you are going to want to dunk The Balls in it. Make sure to tell Randy if you like them.
Boy Named Sous? Obviously, the Sous part is the name of the LLC Randy created. If you aren’t familiar with Johnny Cash, he had a song called “A Boy Named Sue”. But, Randy didn’t have the name picked out until he sent the Sous LLC name to his fantasy football chat, and his friend Anty responded by saying “Boy Named Sous”. The rest is history!
Randy’s Dad has passed, but always wanted him to open his own restaurant. His wife, Justene, told him to quit his job and he’d figure it out. He took the plunge into his own Food Trailer 4 years ago. With the help of Justene, Kevin and Chris, he’s definitely figured it out. This Food Trailer is Rockin’!

Randy grew up in Cleveland until he was 9 and then his family moved to Florida. His Dad made sure he stayed a Browns fan. I debate with him if Vikings fans are more long suffering than Browns fans. He might have a better case to make than I do.
