I love finding and supporting family owned small restaurants. You know they really appreciate every dollar you spend. I’ve been spending my dollars on their basic, but unique, cheeseburger.
The name does mean Family. Oscar is from El Salvador and Hortensia is from Cuba. They lived in Los Angeles and raised their two kids there. That’s the LA part of Familia. A few years ago, they loaded up the food truck and moved to Florida.
The menu is short and sweet. Tacos & burritos, quesadillas and a hot dog. But, it’s the burger that will grab your attention. It starts out as a good, normal burger. A half pound patty, 80/20 ground chuck. Seasoned ok and juicy enough. Under the patty, there is fresh shredded lettuce, diced raw onions and a tomato slice. There is no fancy aioli or burger sauce, it’s old school ketchup, mustard and mayo, which I’m just fine with. You get the trio on the top and bottom buns. It’s a solid sesame seed burger bun. That’s where the normal ends.
I said it was a cheeseburger. They call it Cheese Bacon. I call it a Cheese Skirt. Once Oscar flips the patty, he adds a mound of shredded cheese, a Mexican cheese blend. He makes sure the shredded cheese gets placed on top of the patty and spread out a couple inches around the outside of the patty. The cheese skirt hits that hot grill and is melted perfectly. It gets a nice crispy char on it. The crunch is wonderful.
How are you going to incorporate this cheese skirt into your burger enjoyment? You can go at it as is. You will get a nice crispy crunch with every bite around the outside. You can pull off pieces of the cheese skirt and put them on top of the patty like bacon strips. You can pull off the whole cheese skirt and take a bite of it with every bite of your burger. Or, pull off that lightly burnt, crispy, crunchy, delicious ring of cheese and enjoy it separately, like a side item. Your call!

This is a good burger, with a little tasty twist.
