One thing we’ve noticed since we moved to Florida is that most of the people we meet are not from Florida.  It does make for some good conversations, but we also love to meet native Floridians.  It’s always cool to know where the locals go and what the locals do.  We recently met a couple of Tampa natives.  It wasn’t where they go that interested me, but what they do!

Meat Me At Matty’s – Tampa Bay Area / Double Smash Burger

What they do is Smash Burgers.  What I do is eat Smash Burgers.  I love the natives.  Kelly and Matt are covering the Tampa Bay Area, serving up fantastic Smash Burgers exactly the way you want them.  I don’t have to order one without LTO and then add grilled onions.  Matt will grill my onions or smash them into the beef.  My choice.

The name on the trailer is Meat Me At Matty’s, but if you look closer, it’s Meat Meat Matty’s, and while talking with Matt, it’s all about the Meat.  The beef is the star.  He uses a higher fat content, 73/27 ratio.  As we know, fat is flavor.  He wants the beef to cook in its own fat.  This 3oz. patty is one of juiciest you’ll find that size.  It’s smashed, but not super thin, so that helps it give you more juicy fat flavor with every bite.  It’s seasoned nicely with some Lawrys’s garlic salt.  I chose American cheese the first two times I stopped by, but then had Pepperjack.  That might be my favorite.  The cheese was nicely melted.  I did have Matt make my first Smash, Oklahoma Style, with the onions smashed into the patty, and then asked if he’d grill them for me the second time.  Both were great, but I’ll be leaning towards grilled, as that is always my favorite way on my burger.  I added pickles as well.

The bun is a Martin’s Potato Roll.  It’s soft and toasted and wonderful.  Your choice of condiments are ketchup, mayo and mustard.  I’ll do ketchup and mayo most times.  They have been asked about a burger sauce, but for now, Matt says they want the meat to speak for itself.  No worries.

This is my kind of Smash Burger, done my way.  You’ll enjoy it very much!

Matt is proud of his Smash Burgers, but he actually enjoys getting positive feedback about his hand cut fries even more, as he’s spent a lot of time perfecting them.  They are delicious.  You can pick your fry seasoning too.  Salt me up.  Get the larger basket of fries.

Kelly and Matt met teaching 5th grade English Language Arts.  Kelly loved Matt’s cooking and encouraged him to do a career change.  They researched and decided there was plenty of room for another burger vendor in the area.  I agree with their decision wholeheartedly!

I asked Matt, why Smashburgers?  He said, George Motz inspired him with his love of burgers, and they knew it would be an item they could make on the spot for customers, giving them a fresh lunch or dinner.  I’m guessing the next time they visit NYC, Motz’s restaurant, Hamburger America, will be on their hit list.

Kelly and Matt are two of the nicest people you will meet.

You’ll love these Smashburgers and Fries!
