When I see the statement, “Voted Best Burger in St. Augustine!”, on the menu, it gets your attention. That particular burger called The Conquistador, is a behemoth that I wasn’t prepared to tackle at that moment, and my server told me most patrons do choose the Create Your Own Masterpiece menu option. I was all in.
It all starts with a 1/2 pound Angus patty. A pink medium temp for me was hit nicely. Juicy and seasoned enough as well. American cheese is the choice and it came out white, plentiful and melted beautifully. I love grilled onions, these were red, perfectly sliced and satisfying. Very thin sliced pickles hit the mark as well. Their burger toppings part of the menu doesn’t list any aioli’s or sauces, so I looked through the sandwich part of the menu to find their chipotle mayo and asked for that. She told me they don’t put sauces on the burgers, but I certainly could get some on the side. Sold!
The burger came out opened faced. The bottom bun had the patty, cheese and grilled onions, and the top bun actually had lettuce, tomato and pickles on it. I slid the lettuce and tomato off to the side and kept the pickles. I poured a good amount of the delicious chipotle mayo on top of the cheese & grilled onions and closed that baby up. They make their own fresh house baked rolls for the burgers and they are fantastic. Soft and lightly toasted. A damn good BYOB Cheeseburger it was. I think I’m getting pretty good at this.
Their famous house-made fried pickle slices were the biggest I’ve ever seen. My server said they slice them diagonally, not straight across. That’s why the slices are so long. They were delicious as well.
